Jalopnik’s “A Car Nerd’s Guide To Japan” series is fantastic; and even more fantastic are the original, insightful, well researched comments. I’ve compiled the top 5 comments I’ve seen so far, to give credit to the true car enthusiasts who dutifully represent all of our collective opinions on Japanese car culture. Without further ado...

5 . “Is it bad that the (one unmodified car in the entire article, that you can probably see at any American cars and coffee) is the only one I’d drive?”

4 . “How does Ferrari let people get away with customizing their cars like that?” Better send in the fucking Carabinieri

3 . “These cars would be perfect except the bolts are exposed, which completely and utterly ruin them.”

2 . “Wow, they really love shitty, ugly, cheap looking fender flares that all look exactly the same over there.” Scathing...

1 . “How dare these people on the other side of the world, whose culture I have absolutely zero grasp of, modify their own cars in a way which I find distasteful.”

I’d rather have that than a regular 458

But it’s an abomination and Enzo would be rolling in his grave and the exposed bolts and that’s not a factory color and same, I would too.

If there’s one thing I like about their modifying culture, is that they really do whatever they want and don’t care what anyone thinks. Sure, there are some gaudy and/or badly built cars, but they do it to their taste.

There was a good quote on one of the MCM Japanese specials, where MOOG said something along the lines of “In the Western world, people modify their cars to a perscribed style. In Japan, they just do whatever looks cool or is funny to them”

I’d rather have a 488 over a 458. To me, the 458 is the most disappointing sounding cars in person. All the hype, none of it to live up to. It’s quiet, until it’s not, at which point it sounds like a Honda.

God the front page hate of stance/extensive modifications is so annoying. We get it, you’re 45 and the wife won’t let you mod the sweet ‘stang you bought. Nobody cares that you don’t like it, and nobody cares that you wouldn’t drive it. A majority of jalopnik readers probably couldn’t afford the mod list on many of the cars anyway.

Sorry for ranting, but I’m so fuckin tired of reading “this is so fuckin stupid, i’d never drive this!!” on every damn article with a modded car on the FP. Be glad people still care enough about cars to make them different. So many people around me have zero interest in cars, and genuinely just use them as appliances.

and those headlights are a sin

what are those vents even for?

the 488 is so much classier, much more refined

That’s the perfect way to describe it. Honestly, how else would styles like Dekotora and Bosozuku have been thought of.

Eh, I don’t know about that... I sadly haven’t driven one but I have revved the balls off one and I thought it sounded pretty decent haha

There’s always someone whining about the anime wraps. Always

Jalopnik commentators are just insufferable now.. some of the writers (d Tracy) are headed in that direction too

Compared to a 355, 360, and 430, it sounds like a Civic Si with a slightly louder exhaust.

The race car makes up for the poor sound of the road car.

Nope. Liberty Walk, RWB, and Rocket bunny kits can all burn to a garish pile of ash. It’s not just the Japanese. It’s anyone who does that to their cars

Anime wraps are good in my book. Obnoxious wide body kits and excessive negative camber are not

I love the insanity of it all. Sure, maybe some cars are over done, or not to my personal taste, but if the owner enjoys it, why should I be bothered? If I was in Japan I’d be saving my money to turn my car into a car that looks more like it should be racing in Super GT.

Not totally unrelated to your post, but I do find it a little annoying that all the Japanese car culture articles have very click-baity titles. Like, overtly so. To the point where I can’t tell if it’s intentional or not.

“Blow your mind...”, “Totally crazy...” Etc. Super cool cars though, no disagreement there.

I’m split over this. If it’s a show car, go all out. I’m totally down for that. But you start driving your stanced/cambered/hellaflush machine with 0.01 inches of ground clearance on public roads, and I’ll be among the naysayers also. I don’t want to destroy my car because you lost a damn fender/bumper/wheel on a pothole and strew bits all over the pavement.

Here’s a torch I’ll grab the gas

Also my problem with them isn’t the flares itself. It’s how mundane they are. They take otherwise unique cars and make them all look the same with the same damn formula. Flares, fasteners, negative camber. To me they’re no better than a kid who pits a veilside kit on their civic.

I’m all for modifying your car how you want but doing it cause you think you’re being unique is idiotic when everyone else right now is doing some sort of wide body kit

I’m not saying I like them in all applications either, but that’s kind of the nature of customizing trends. People do that to their car because they like the way it looks, the same way people chopped ‘32 Fords, airbrushed murals on vans, and put wings on Civics.
